3 Products Helping You Build for Today and Think About Tomorrow
Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration in the building industry, but choosing more sustainable products doesn’t have to mean sacrificing performance, durability or design. Today’s building products are finding new ways to make use of recycled and upcycled materials, reduce waste and deliver long-term value.
At Palmer-Donavin, we offer a growing selection of products that bring sustainability and performance together. Here are three products worth knowing about for your next project.
ACRE | Building Without Cutting Down a Single Tree

What if you could get the look and feel of wood without relying on newly harvested timber?
ACRE by Modern Mill is made from upcycled rice hulls, an agricultural byproduct that would otherwise contribute to landfill waste. The material is engineered into boards through zero-waste manufacturing processes, including closed-loop water systems. ACRE is also manufactured in the United States, helping reduce the transportation impacts associated with overseas manufacturing.
The sustainability story doesn’t stop once the product reaches the jobsite. ACRE scraps and shavings can be returned to the manufacturer and recycled into new products, helping keep material in circulation rather than sending it to the landfill.
With applications including siding, trim, decking and other outdoor products, ACRE gives builders another option for projects where sustainability is a priority without giving up the appearance of a wood-based product.

Malarkey Roofing | Rethinking the Roof

Eco-friendly roofing starts with the materials that go into it. Malarkey Roofing Products take a more sustainable approach by incorporating upcycled and recycled materials into their shingles, helping reduce waste while delivering products designed for long-term performance.
That includes rubber from discarded tires and recycled plastics, giving these materials a second life in roofing products. Through this approach, Malarkey reports that its shingles have helped divert approximately 9.6 million rubber tires and 6.3 billion plastic bags from landfills.
Combined with their sustainability, Malarkey also focuses on creating roofing products that are built to perform over time. Their NEX® Polymer Modified Rubberized Asphalt formulation is designed to enhance durability, impact resistance and granule adhesion, helping shingles withstand the elements and maintain their performance over the long term. Malarkey also offers shingles with smog-reducing granules designed to help reduce certain air pollutants.
By considering both the materials used to make their shingles and how those products perform over time, Malarkey takes a broader approach to sustainable roofing. The result is a roofing solution designed to help reduce waste while delivering the durability and protection needed to perform for years to come.

Fiberon | Giving Recycled Materials a Second Life

Composite decking has already changed the way we think about outdoor living, and Fiberon is taking a resourceful approach to the materials used in its products.
Approximately half of the material in Fiberon decking comes from recycled wood, including sawdust and leftover wood material that would otherwise be discarded. Fiberon’s use of recycled wood help prevent nearly one million trees from being cut down each year. The other half of the core comes from recycled plastic, including materials such as grocery bags and recycled packaging.
Fiberon also operates an in-house recycling facility that processes approximately 100 million pounds of plastic each year. Its manufacturing facilities use closed-loop water systems that reuse nearly all of the water required during production, saving nearly 3.5 billion gallons of water annually.
Beyond the environmental benefits, Fiberon composite decking is designed for long-term performance with minimal maintenance, giving customers an outdoor living solution that can last for years.

More Sustainable Options Start Here
Sustainability in building isn’t limited to one material or one type of project. It can be found in the roofing materials overhead, the siding and trim surrounding a home, or the decking where people gather outside.
With products like Malarkey, ACRE and Fiberon available through Palmer-Donavin, you have more options to help customers make choices that consider both performance today and the future ahead.
